My hair is on fire with all the comments on multiple platforms from people who should understand the critical role of due process in our legal system. Due process is not a "liberal" innovation - it's enshrined in the 5th Amendment and is a bedrock principle of our constitutional democratic republic. It might feel good temporarily when those you despise are carted off after the proverbial knock on the door, but it won't feel good for long because it means that your government has become authoritarian. Thank you, Ilan, for the clear-headed analysis of Trump's attempt to deport the Columbia student without benefit of due process.

Hamas wants less aid going into Gaza, because they want Palestinians to suffer as a way to discredit Israel internationally. Maybe the deal should be to offer to *cut off* aid in exchange for the release of hostages!!

I'd stop using the phrase "the American Jewish community." There is no such "community." I'm sure you know that. "Population, maybe..."

I enjoy the author's articles and mostly agree with his perspectives. I am troubled by the almost automatic reaction to any criticism in the media of the policies of the Isreal government or pro-Palestinian advocacy to be equated with antisemitism. The author could (and should, in my opinion) make a stronger distinction between advocating for the humanitarian treatment of the Palestinians in Gaza and being antisemitic. It might be worthwhile to re-read the Balford Agreement, which is widely accepted as an early justification for the eventual creation of the State of Isreal. As we in the US are still grappling with the inherent systematic mistreatment of our non-white / European populations from our founding, so will Israel for generations to come.

You never miss an opportunity to support those who hate Jews. It's appalling. Khalil, a criminal who the friendly DA doesn't want to prosecute, does not need to be convicted of a crime to be deported. He has supported terrorism and Hamas, and acted as representative for CUAD, which openly supports Hamas. Green card holders have some speech rights, but they do not have a right to stay in the country if they do this; that's been confirmed by the Supreme Court for the past 100+ years, and is codified in US law at 8 USC 1182.

It's not authoritarian to deport pro-terrorism antisemites who are on camera trespassing, denying Jewish students their right to an education, and the like. It's not authoritarian to deport people who have no inherent right to be in the United States, hate the United States, and lead organizations that openly support genociding Jews. The U.S. is not required to leave a noncitizen here who does so.
