Nice balanced report. Certainly there is plenty of fault on all sides, but you have to start somewhere. Bottom line is that Israel is the main roadblock to a lasting peace in the Middle East.
I always find myself wondering why Palestinian agency is not front and center, and every decision is presented as one Israel has to make. No thanks. Setting aside that obvious flaw, much of this article downplays the Palestinian Authority, which runs a "pay for slay" policy paying bounties for the murder of Jews, actively cooperates with many terrorist groups as long as it can exercise some control over them, and most importantly, has no authority or legitimacy or ability to control Gaza and would easily fail to do so.
This piece is advocacy for the Hezbollah model in Gaza, where Hamas gets an effective veto and separation from the difficulty of governance without losing their ability to commit terrorism, rebuild, and seek the destruction of Israel and murder of Jews.
That has failed in Lebanon as it would fail in Gaza. No thanks.
Makes sense. Seems like the Palestinians would be better off if the short and medium term focus shifted away from any plan for an independent state or democracy and towards the goal of a peaceful, and reasonably humane and effective government. Get that accomplished and maybe in a couple generations the possibility of true independence opens up. Saudis and other Arab states need to accept that the process will be generational, not this year or next or even in five years. If you push for independence first it will never happen. Which unfortunately is exactly why the Israeli right is dead set against improvements to the PA that would allow this to happen.
He is also a convicted terrorist who has murdered multiple civilians, and continues to push for more terrorism. He is barely "Fatah", is a terrible person, is supported by Hamas, and more.
it was a very dubious conviction. Many people believe unsafe and motivated by political concerns in israel and not truth and it was many years ago. He is the best chance of a way forward unless of course you are if the Netanyahu persuasion and wish permanent occupation and state terrorism and war
Nonsense. He has a long history and clear participation in terrorism. Enough whitewashing this murderer. As Yair Lapid, one of the main political party leaders opposing Netanyahu:
“Barghouti doesn’t only believe in violence, he also believes that its permissible to lie. He believes in the approach, which typifies terror organizations, that the West is weak and naïve and so our media and good intentions should be cynically abused to attack us from within.”
And:
“The peak of Barghouti’s violent ‘career’ came during the Second Intifada…Yasser Arafat said “no” [to peace] and sent Barghouti and his people to murder Israelis in suicide attacks on buses and in shopping malls.”
In reality, a court convicted him of leading a terror group (the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade), and led those who bombed a restaurant, in which three people were murdered. The court also found Barghouti responsible for a June 2001 attack in Maale Adumim, in which a Greek monk was murdered, a January 2002 terror attack on a gas station in Givat Zeev, and a car bomb attack in Jerusalem. In addition, he was also convicted of a charge of attempted murder, membership in a terror organization and conspiring to commit a crime.
He is a murdering terrorist. He does not signify peace. He signifies violence. Enough.

there is Barghouti but Israel won’t release him. He is Fatah and has credibility in Gaza and the West Bank
He is also a convicted terrorist who has murdered multiple civilians, and continues to push for more terrorism. He is barely "Fatah", is a terrible person, is supported by Hamas, and more.
